Activity: Faculty Focus
Date: 1/21/14
Group: Instructional Systems and Services
Time spent: 5 hrs
The purpose of the Faculty Focus is to visit with faculty in each of the institution’s colleges to address faculty needs and concerns. Most areas of concern for faculty include Desire2Learn (D2L) functionality and workstation issues. IT staff are grouped into teams of three – a workstation technician, an instructional support analyst, and an IT manager. Multiple teams may be assigned to multiple buildings, depending on how many faculty there are in the building.
Today was Day 1. I was teamed with Erick (IT Manager and Instructional Support Analyst) and James (Workstation Support). I volunteered to keep record of all the offices we visited. We were assigned to the College of Dental Medicine located on the Health Sciences campus. This is a HUGE building so there was another team working in building along with us. Most of the faculty we met mentioned that they did not have major issues. There were some that had general computer issues that could be resolved in a few minutes. We covered the 1st, 2nd, and 5th floors. It was a great opportunity for me because I got to meet a whole lot of new faces. I also learned a lot about the building. Lots of teeth everywhere! LOL.

Today was Day 2. James was out today so Nathan replaced him as the Workstation Support Technician. We took a different route today and visited the Dental faculty that had moved to the Research building. There were only a few. We then went back to the College of Dental Medicine and visited the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors. Most of the issues today had to do with faculty not being able to access their clinical applications. They claimed that the network was very slow. Other issues were related to Banner and Java incompatibility and printer issues. We visited a few faculty that were also skilled at sculpting, painting, and woodcarving. Their work is currently displayed throughout the Dental building and in the clinical areas. It’s pretty cool.

Today was Day 3. James came back today. We re-visited the 1st, 2nd, and 5th floors in the College of Dental Medicine. We were actually able to catch a few of the faculty we missed on the first two days. We also went to the Pedo (Pediatric Dentistry) department. It is really nice. The kids have lots of colorful activities to preoccupy them before their dental visit. We also walked through a few of the clinical areas. The field of Dentistry is amazing! Most of the issues today were the same as before: Outlook email access, Banner issues, monitor and printers issues, etc. However, I was able to speak to a few faculty about the importance of creating measurable learning objectives.

Today was Day 4. I was assigned to work with Eddie (IT Manager) on the Summerville campus. The faculty on this campus had more questions and problems with the instructional technologies (i.e. D2L, Echo360). Since I was previously an Instructional Systems Analyst, I was able to answer the instructional technology questions that faculty had. I helped a new College of Education (COE) professor set up a D2L Quiz and also gave her some best practice tips on how to record course lectures using Echo360 Lecture Capture System. We then went to the College of Education’s Dean’s Office and helped the office admins troubleshoot one of the Associate Dean’s Banner printing issues. The Associate Dean also needed a network password reset. Eddie had to make a few phone calls and change a couple of settings to get everything back in working order. After we left COE, we went to the Music and Art department. I could have stayed there all day. I have a loving appreciation for Art and Music. I was able to assist an Opera instructor with finding her D2L courses and identifying her course sections. Most of the Art department’s issues were hardware or computer related so Eddie handled those.
