The Office of Institutional Effectiveness requested that a presentation on how to effectively define and assess student learning outcomes in online programs and courses using the Learning Management System, Desire2Learn. My practicum supervisor and I met to discuss the request. We began work on a Needs Assessment to determine exactly what the actual training need would be. I got some great feedback from the Instructional Systems Analysts. We determined that we would present how D2L tools can be used to assess student learning outcomes and promote student learning as well as well as strategies and best practices for teaching online.
The workshop went OK, however, we the participants were more interested in how D2L could be used to assess and manage learning outcomes at the program level. They had several questions about how to use the D2L Competency and Analytics tool to track student outcomes across courses in a program. Though our workshop was not done in vain, we were addressing a need at a much lower level than what our audience had in mind. We planned to meet with our D2L administrators to research and test the functionality of the Analytics and Competency tools at the program level.
